MICHIGAN COMMISION
FOR THE BLIND

The Michigan Commission for the Blind (MCB) is a government agency that provides opportunities to individuals with visual disabilities to achieve employability and/or function independently in society. The following is a brief description of their programs:

Vocational Rehabilitation Services: This program has the primary responsibility for preparing legally blind men and women for gainful, competitive employment. Program counselors work closely with each client in developing a rehabilitation program that is suited to the client's interests, aptitudes and potential skills.

Michigan Commission for the Blind Training Center: Located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this facility provides rehabilitation training to legally blind adults. Classes are offered in 25 areas including Braille, handwriting, mobility, homemaking, personal management, industrial arts and crafts. Clients learn to use a variety of adapted devices such as raised dot timers and watches, hand tools, talking calculators, reading machines and computers. Special training is also offered in vending stand operation, college preparation and job seeking skills.

Business Enterprise Program: The Business Enterprise Program licenses blind persons to operate vending stands, snack bars, cafeterias, gift shops, and store-type operations.

Independent Living Rehabilitation Services: This program provides advocacy and rehabilitation services to elderly and multiply impaired blind persons. Counseling and advocacy services are provided that inform clients of their legal and economic rights. Also, MCB staff establish and train peer counseling groups, conduct surveys of community resources and provide adaptive devices and instruction in homemaking, Braille and mobility.

Youth Low Vision Program: This program is designed to purchase low vision examinations and sophisticated, prescriptive glasses for those under 26 years of age. A prospective youth is required to have a visual acuity of 20/70 or less in the better eye after routine refractive correction, or a visual field of 20 degrees or less in both eyes. The MCB believes that early intervention enhances emotional, educational and physical development, therefore, service priority is given to younger children.
