There are public, community, and private services that provide transportation assistance. The following list will get you started.

  • Michigan Department of Transportation (517-373-2090)

  • Local Public Transit System: call for bus schedules and possible Dial-A-Ride Services

  • Chamber of Commerce, City Hall, Local Library

  • Local Churches, Synagogue, etc.

  • Discuss establishing a Ride Share Program with your employer

  • Human Service Agencies: Michigan Family Independence Agency, Community Mental Health Agency, Area Agency on Aging

  • Service Clubs: Lions, Rotary, Kiwanis

  • Fraternal Groups: Shriners, Knights of Columbus, Moose, Eagles, Elks

  • Private Carriers: Limo Services, Taxi

 

Helpful Hints

  • A Handicap Parking Permit allows a person to park in a handicap parking space when transporting a person who is legally blind.

  • Applications (MV-7) can be obtained from any Secretary of State Office.

  • There is no charge for a Handicap Parking Permit for those who are legally blind. A doctor's certification or Michigan Commission for the Blind Certificate of blindness is required.

  • Contact your local Secretary of State Office to obtain a special identification card that serves as ID in place of a driver's license. The fee is waived for persons who are legally blind or 65 years of age or older.
